Signs of Brake Wear and Tear

Your brakes are arguably the most important part of your vehicle. Because of this, making sure that you know the warning signs for when your brakes are wearing down is extremely important to maintaining the overall appearance of your car not to mention the safety of you and others who are on the roadway. If you are trained and have the tools, you may be able to look at your brakes yourself to see whether or not they are worn. However, if you are like most other vehicle owners, you will need to have a qualified, certified mechanic look at your vehicle’s brakes in order to determine whether or not your brake pads are worn down as well as the degree to which they are worn through and/or whether or not they need to be replaced.

There are a few components to your brakes that include your brake pads as well as your rotors. Signs that your brakes may be starting to wear include things such as a pulsating feeling whenever you try to slow down. For example, when I first owned my Nissan Altima when I was a freshman in college, the car was brand new. However, after a few months to a year after owning it, I began to notice that whenever I would try to slow down for a light, the car didn’t coast to a smooth stop. Rather, the vehicle would come to what can only be described as a pulsating stop. After a while, this pulsating sensation became worse, making me concerned over whether or not that was normal. One day, while driving with a friend, she noticed the pulsating sensation and commented on it saying that this was one of the tell tale signs that my brakes were probably shot. Immediately concerned and now somewhat fearful for my life, I made an appointment that day to have my car looked at. Sure enough, the brakes were indeed shot. Not only this, but when I brought my car in to have it looked at, the mechanic told me that it was a good thing that I brought it in when I did because I was apparently dangerously close to having my brakes almost completely worn through. As proof of this, he showed me the brakes, which had almost nothing left. I sat there ashamed that I had let this problem go for so long, mistakenly thinking that it was normal.
